Last week, IGRAC participated in the ´Training the Trainer´ workshop, organised by the FREEWAT project team at the UNESCO head office in Paris. The FREEWAT project aims to develop an open source and public domain GIS integrated modelling environment for the simulation of water quantity and quality in surface water and groundwater with an integrated water management and planning module.

During this training, participants had the chance to further get acquainted with the modeling capabilities of the FREEWAT tool and to learn how to use this platform to solve water management issues. IGRAC and UNESCO-IHP have joined forces to contribute to FREEWAT and apply it to a case study in Southern Africa: The Stampriet Aquifer System. This aquifer is shared by South Africa, Botswana and Namibia. The training was also attended by representatives of these countries and we had the opportunity to discuss the case study.
