From 20 to 22 September 2017, the 3rd and final FREEWAT general consortium meeting was held in Barcelona, Spain. During this meeting, the main outcomes and concrete tools developed by the FREEWAT (FREE and open source software tools for WATer resource management) project were shared with all consortium members and stakeholders that participated in the meeting (including IGRAC). FREEWAT is an Horizon2020 project financed by the EU commission under the call 'Water Innovation: Boosting its value for Europe' and the project’s main result is the FREEWAT platform, a large plugin integrated into QGIS.

FREEWAT 3rd general consortium meeting

The meeting was composed of three days:

  • Day 1 – During this first day, the general project status and outcomes were discussed and presented.
  • Day 2 – On this second day, the 1st FREEWAT User and Developer International Meeting took place. The main outcomes and concrete tools developed within FREEWAT were discussed in details by means of a set of presentations from case studies. Later that day, the discussion focused more on the period after FREEWAT and how to make sure that the plugin will stay up-to-date and available to everyone. Setting up a FREEWAT association to ensure this continuity was an option presented and discussed within the partnership.
  • Day 3 – On the 3rd and last day of the meeting, an open workshop ‘ICT tools for innovating groundwater management in a changing world’ was held. This workshop was used to examine how ICT tools can serve the societal needs across Europe in the water domain.

FREEWAT Plugin

The FREEWAT platform (v.0.4) is a large plugin integrated into the QGIS GIS desktop. FREEWAT includes several modules for dealing with water management issues with particular attention to groundwater. Groundwater numerical models (mainly from the MODFLOW USGS family) constitute the basis of the plugin, which also comprises modules for solute transport and density-dependent flow in aquifers.
