UNESCO IHP and the University of Frankfurt will soon start the implementation of the modelling and scenario building exercise within the TWAP Groundwater Component.

Prof. Petra Doell, a world known scientist with an extensive experience in global scale groundwater modelling, will lead the University of Frankfurt expert group. Current conditions and future scenarios of groundwater quantity related issues will be simulated using the global water resources and water use model WaterGAP, which was presented at the TWAP Groundwater Inception Meeting in Perugia, Italy, on 14-15 May 2013. Prof. Doell informed the meeting on the indicators selected for the modelling exercise and scenario building, as well as the main challenges facing the exercise. The activities are expected to start immediately, and will be completed during the second half of 2014.

The figure above shows results from previous applications of the Water GAP model, in the calculation of groundwater withdrawals. For further information about the model consult WaterGAP website: http://www.watergap.de/.
