Western Africa

Currently, IGRAC is involved in the Groundwater Futures in Sub-Saharan Africa (GroFutures) project and one of the three case study areas is the Iullemeden-Irhazer Aquifer System, shared by Niger and Nigeria. GroFutures is a 4-year research project that is part of the UPGro programme and aims to develop the scientific evidence base, tools and participatory processes by which groundwater resources can be used sustainably for poverty alleviation in Sub-Saharan Africa.

As a contribution to the GroFutures project, IGRAC is improving the Groundwater Serious Game, which is being used as an awareness raising tool between stakeholders. It helps them to understand the dilemmas faced by small-scale farmers seeking effective and equitable ways to manage their groundwater resources individually and collectively to irrigate their land. Last year, a serious game session was held at a GroFutures workshop in Niamey, Niger
