IGRAC Director in IHE Delft alumni seminar about groundwater

On 12 December 2019, IGRAC Director Neno Kukuric was the speaker of an IHE Delft online seminar, called 'Online Seminar: Groundwater, making the invisible visible'. IHE Delft Alumni & Partners Online Seminars are designed as a means of providing lifelong learning to the Institute Alumni community and Partners. Since the topics are of interest to a broader audience, they are open to all interested persons. The Online Seminars are like interactive lectures transmitted over the web, with a duration of one hour including time for discussion. The seminar is organized in collaboration with the WaterChannel.

Online Seminar: Groundwater, making the invisible visible

Groundwater provides almost half of all drinking water worldwide, about 40% of water for irrigated agriculture and about 1/3 of water required for industry. It sustains ecosystems, maintains the baseflow of rivers and prevents land subsidence and seawater intrusion. Groundwater is an important part of climate change adaptation process and is often a solution for people without access to safe water. Despite these impressive facts and figures, invisible groundwater is out of sight and out of mind for most people. Human activities (including growth of population and wealth) and climate variability are increasing the pressure on groundwater resources; serious pollution and depletion problems are reported for many parts of the world. Nevertheless, we still do not know sufficient about the state of groundwater resources (aquifers) globally and we do not manage them well enough. How can we improve visibility, knowledge of and the state of our groundwaters? Do we need to turn invisible in visible… or perhaps use some other magic to increase awareness about this precious resource? This and more was touched upon by Neno in this webinar, also sharing 15 years of experience of IGRAC.

Questions and answers

Unfortunately, IHE Delft (where the seminar was recorded) had to be evacuated due to a fire alarm towards the end of the seminar. Therefore, the speaker did not have the possibility to answer all questions from the audience. In case you have any questions related to any of the topics discussed, please send an email. Some attendees already did and their questions have been aswered in this doument: [[{"fid":"2127","view_mode":"default","fields":{"format":"default","alignment":""},"type":"media","field_deltas":{"1":{"format":"default","alignment":""}},"link_text":"Q&A Webinar on Groundwater.pdf","attributes":{"class":"media-element file-default","data-delta":"1"}}]]
