Background

IGRAC (the International Groundwater Resources Assessment Centre) is a UNESCO global groundwater centre which also works under auspices of the World Meteorological Organization and has been supported by the Government of the Netherlands. Since 2003, IGRAC promotes and facilitates worldwide exchange of groundwater knowledge and contributes to assessment of the global groundwater resources.

Responsibilities

Groundwater specialist participates in preparation and implementation of IGRAC core activities and external projects, including assessment, monitoring and management of global groundwater resources. Together with other colleagues, the specialist prepares capacity building activities and updates the content of the Global Groundwater Information System (GGIS). The duties also include organising, conducting and follow-up of meetings and workshops in various parts of the World.

The specialist will in particular be involved in execution of a Global Gravity-based Groundwater Product (G3P) project. This EU HORIZON 2020 project aims to develop a product of groundwater storage variations with global coverage and monthly resolution from 2002 until present, by cross-cutting combination of satellite gravity data with the water storage data obtained from the Copernicus services. Within the project, the specialist works on evaluation of the G3P against in-situ observations.

Education and skills

Required:

  • Master's degree in hydrogeology or related environmental science area with advanced knowledge of geology and hydrogeology.
  • Skilled GIS (ArcGIS and/or QGIS) user.
  • Fluency in oral and written English.

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of (geo)statistics.
  • Knowledge of a programming language (e.g. python, R, Visual Basic).
  • Knowledge of an additional United Nations language.

Work Experience

Work experience will be considered as advantageous for a junior position. Candidates with a several years of work experience will be considered for a medior position.
