IGRAC has an internship position available on 'Multi-disciplinary assessment of groundwater resources in Pacific Small Island Developing States in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals'. Candidates that are currently enrolled in a degree programme in a graduate school (second university degree or higher) and are available for two to three months can apply for this internship by sending their applications, including CV, to IGRAC by email: info@un-igrac.org. The application deadline for this internship is 15 February 2016.

Background information

Small Island Developing States (SIDS) have limited options for developing their freshwater resources and are highly vulnerable to the effects of climate change. There is a high level of human dependency on groundwater in these states. Over the last decades, there has been a significant effort in developing a sustainable level of capacity in Pacific SIDS to monitor and assess the status and trend of the water resources. These efforts aimed at providing water-related information and hazard warnings needed to support social, economic and infrastructural development and environmental protection. However, despite the high dependency on groundwater in SIDS, there is a lack of baseline groundwater assessments in SIDS and the priority need for establishing basic sustainable yields, monitoring of abstraction, and the development of basic governance structures to support these resources (SOPAC, 2010; Allen et al, 2014; TWAP, 2015).

In September 2015 the United Nations General Assembly adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which includes 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) with 169 associated targets. The new goals and targets will come into effect on 1 January 2016 and will guide the decisions of UN organisations and member states over the next 15 years. This study will focus on Pacific SIDS and will investigate how targets 6.3 – 6.6 of the SDG 6 ‘Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all‘ can be assessed and monitored in the context of SIDS.

Project description

The project consists of a multi-disciplinary assessment on current state and future challenges of groundwater resources in Pacific SIDS. The scope of the project activities includes:

  • Analysis of data collected on Pacific SIDS within the Transboundary Water Assessment Programme (TWAP)
  • Analysis of proposed indicators of SDG 6 in the context of SIDS.
  • Identify knowledge gaps on groundwater resources development in Pacific SIDS
